How to Build a Life and Business Connected to Your Purpose

If you want to know how to build a life and business connected to your purpose, you must first examine your thought life.

Renew Your Mind

You are what you think. No matter how many times you avoid this concept, you will always return right back to it. And if there’s any doubt in the relevancy of this concept, scripture tells us that “As a man thinketh, so is he,” (Proverbs 23:7). Paul also tells that we shouldn’t be “conformed to this world, but be renewed (Romans 12:2). James Allen also wrote the book, As a Man Thinketh. There are countless other books written on the importance of developing and managing our mindsets.

So, the first step is to renew your mind in truth. And while you’re in this process, be sure to develop your spiritual understanding of yourself. You are a spiritual being, and you are connected to others and to God. People were not created to exist in isolation and to serve only themselves. So, our purpose is inherently to be of value to others while we are here on earth.

As a result of the way God created you, you must seek His will. Since we are all spiritual beings connected to God, we must be willing to explore our relationships with Him. It is essential to seek Him out and learn about the plan that He has for our lives.

The second step is to connect with God. Connecting our hearts and minds to God brings us face-to-face with our purpose. As God is our Creator, whatever we do reflects on Him. So, should you decide to spend your time doing nothing while you’re here, then the outcome is that you didn’t value yourself, your time, the gift that God placed in you, nor did you value His belief in you.

However, should you decide to accept the realization that God sent you here for a purpose, and that He has a plan for you to carry out that purpose, then your life can become a life of purpose, value, impact, and significance.

With this understanding, it’s important for us to stop seeking something that is found inside ourselves in other resources. Purpose does not exist outside of us. It isn’t found in some guru or hidden place. Purpose is found in the quiet place where we meet God.

Our single, most important, purpose is to bring God glory.

What we are truly seeking are answers about how to operate in our purpose, how to live a life of purpose. You just learnt that your ultimate purpose is to bring glory to God. And that’s because God enables us, empowers us, gives us life, strength, sound minds, gifts, capabilities, resources, and power through His Holy Spirit, relationships He places in our lives, gifts He granted us, and resources to help us carry out His plan. So, all the glory goes back to Him to encourage others to walk in their purposes and His plans.

Purpose in Life and Business

So, as we wrap up this post, I ask you to spend time getting clear on the questions you ask. When you ask the right questions, you will find the answers you need.

This is the third step: Ask the right questions.

To reiterate, your question isn’t, “How to find your purpose in life?” It’s really, “How do I walk in purpose?” Or “How do I live a life of purpose?”

And again, these answers aren’t found outside of you. God has given every one of His children a gift. I’ll pose the below questions to you, and I encourage you to take the time to sit when them and explore them with God. Let Him speak to you and guide you in the direction that He wants you to go.

Questions for you to think about to help you get clear on living your purpose.

  • What’s in your hand?
  • Name some things that the people around you tell you that you do well?
  • What do you do when no one is watching you?
  • Identify a need or issue do you see in your environment or in the lives of others that you wish someone would do something about?
  • What did you use to dream about doing with your life and time before you grew up and realized you had to earn a living?
  • List some things that nag or keep prompting your heart, even if it’s an entirely different direction that you’ve been going in your life?
  • Have you ever felt called by God but felt it couldn’t have been right or that He couldn’t have been calling you?

Well, it’s time to spend time reflecting on these questions and talk about them with God. There’s no time to waste! Our lives are already short enough, we don’t have the luxury of going in the wrong direction for too long or doing things that do not serve our purposes.

Businesses serve the needs of others. Businesses identify the needs of the marketplace and earn a profit because they bring solutions and value to the marketplace.

If you want to create a business, write a book, earn a living in the purpose you identified, then seek to find out how you can bring solutions to that need. You can also talk with God about this. Creating a business or initiative is simply learning to fulfill an identified need. You can do that and bring glory to God by how you operate your business and how you serve your environment.
